News for employers of Reservists

News for employers of Reservists - two interesting changes to bolster plans to increase the numbers of Reservists in the Forces.  The statutory qualifying period for unfair dismissal will be removed where the dismissal is connected with the employee’s membership of the Reserve Forces.  This will only apply to those employees whose effective date of termination falls after 1 October 2014.  Beware, there are also possible criminal sanctions against employers.

SMEs will be entitled to claim monthly payments from the MoD for periods when reservist employees are absent on military service.  The new payment scheme entitles employers to an additional monthly payment of £500 for each full month that a mobilised reservist is absent from work, assuming that they are on a full-time contract and work at least 35 hours a week (pro-rated for periods of less than a month and where the reservist is contracted to work fewer than 35 hours a week).
